Chandbaja (Faridkot), January 26, 2017: A highly embarrassing situation was created for Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) here today when resident of village Chandbaja in Kotkapura Assembly constituency detained Akali leader and member of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) Sher Singh Mandwala for using objectionable language against them during poll campaigning.
Sensing trouble, the sitting SAD MLA from Kotkapura Mantar Singh Brar, who is seeking re-election from this seat, slipped away from the spot leaving behind Mandwala. Accompanied by Mandwala, Brar was in the village to seek votes for himself.
Highly incensed over the behavior of Mandwala, villagers detained him in a house in the village for 4 hours. They relented only after Mandwala apologized on the police intervention. The police, which reached the spot on being informed, faced a tough time in diffusing the situation.
Eyewitnesses said the situation during the poll meeting took an ugly turn when villagers reminded Brar about his previous promise of Rs 2 lakh grant to made with the village youths for promoting cricket. Mandwala said the grant has been released to Lakhwinder Singh of the village who vehemently denied this. On hearing this, Mandwala reacted to this in objectionable language against all villagers.
After his release, Mandwala termed the incident as a political drama enacted at the behest of the rival political parties. He also denied having used any derogatory words. Even the apology failed to mollify the villagers who kept raising slogans against him and SAD. While he was being escorted away, the villagers pelted his car with stones. Mandwala was seen running for saftey.
